The Greater Works

Verily, verily, I say unto you, He
That believeth on me, the works that
I do shall he do also; and greater works
Than these shall he do; because I go unto
My Father.
Jn14:12

In the life of Christ, the work of the Holy Spirit was to reveal the Father.  In Jesus ministry the work was primarily healing the body, casting out devils, and raising the dead.  Jesus says to Philip “If you see me, you see the Father.”  Now we see with the apostles that even though there was a great desire to follow Christ, when it came to the cross, all fled.  Their nature had not changed.  They still were capable of sin and fear and death.  Something had to happen to them internally that would change their nature.  That something was Pentecost.  When Jesus went to the Father he sent down the Holy Spirit and the disciples were baptized in the Spirit, became drunk and gave utterance in tongues.  Then Peter preaches and thousands come into the church.  It was the beginning of the greater works.

When Jesus was on earth the role of the Holy Spirit was to reveal the Father.  When Jesus ascended into heaven and sent down the Holy Spirit, the role of the Holy Spirit is to reveal the Father and the Son.  With Jesus the work of the Holy Spirit as we mentioned dealt primarily with the body.  Now with Christ in heaven the work of the Holy Spirit is to not only heal the body but maybe more importantly to give a person a new nature and a new mind.  This indeed is the greater works that Jesus is talking about.  To receive the divine nature (2Pt1:4) and the mind of Christ (1Cor2:16) is of far greater value than just having your body healed or demons cast out or being raised from the dead.  It is to have your sin forgiven and be baptized in the Holy Spirit, and receive entire sanctification that proves to be the greater works.  Not only can the believer lay hands on the sick for physical healing, he can preach the word of God so that those who hear can receive faith and the grace for salvation.

Christianity is a progressive experience.  We should not be content with being born again.  We should be born again and baptized in the Spirit.  We should not be just born again and baptized in the Spirit.  We should receive the mind of Christ which is the evidence of entire sanctification.  We should not be content to receive the blessings of God for ourselves alone but we should receive the gifts of Christ, apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers, for the equipping of the saints and the edifying of the body of Christ to we all come into the fullness of Christ.  It is not good, better, and best.  It is good, better, best, and best with improvement.  It is a continuous journey of faith for the salvation of the lost and the glory of God.  So stay hungry and continue to desire more and not only will you be blessed but also the lost, sick, and forsaken, and God will be glorified.

Amen
