It is written: Man shall not live by bread alone, but by
every
word that proceedeth from the mouth of God. Mt4:4 When we are born we live by bread. We live by natural means. We respond to the body for food, shelter, clothing, sexual desires, mental stimulation, and exercise. When we are born again and receive the Holy Spirit, we are to respond to the word that proceedeth from the mouth of God. As we do this, the spirit of man and his soul become separate and distinct Hb4:12-13. As a natural man the body and soul predominate. As a spiritual man the word of God predominates. Jesus though hungry neither responds to his flesh or the devil. He lives now on a different plain and will not respond to his flesh or the devil. He lives by the word and the Spirit.
We have spent some time over the years talking about
spirituality. The point of reading scripture is not to read it to
satisfy the carnal man but the spiritual man. What we must learn
to recognize is the leading of the Spirit and not to indulge the
flesh. Many people who have the Spirit use scripture for the
wrong reasons. Scripture as it pertains to man is to foster love,
faith, hope, forgiveness, patience, joy, humility, and a vigilant,
uncritical eye. God knows we have physical needs. Jesus
hadn't eaten for forty days yet he does not respond to the flesh or the
temptation of the devil and as spirit filled Christians neither should
we. It is as we conquer the flesh that we become pliable in the
hand of God and we hear His word and not the desires of the carnal
man. So appropriate Jesus response to the devil's invitation and
walk in the Spirit. Amen |
