Let us lay aside every weight
Heb12:1
In order to achieve a sound spiritual life it is imperative that we get
free inside. We must free ourselves from spirits that act as
weights, heavy on the soul, causing all sorts of problems for the
average Christian. It lends itself to stress, depression,
fatigue, weariness, proneness to accidents, sickness, and strife.
The weights as catologued in Colossians are many. From
fornication to covetousness, from uncleanness to inordinate affection,
sexual spiritual sins are weights. Others mentioned are
anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication, and lying.
In order to get free we must put off the old man and put on the new man
which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him who created us
(Col3:5-10). So unless we put off the old man, set aside every
weight, and put on the new man, we will live with the curse of Adam and
die never experiencing victory in Christ. So the question is, how
do we get there? Scripture is given for reproof, correction, and instruction in righteousness. It is a discerner of the thoughts and intentions of the heart. We get renewed in knowledge by learning who this Christ is and how far short we fall from the glory of God. The old man is the sin nature we are born with and the new man is the man born of the Spirit. Even though St. Paul is talking to Christians with a new nature, he recognizes the need to mortify the flesh in order to live a sound spiritual life. We must put off the deeds of the flesh, crucify them as it were and allow the fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, meekness, kindness, goodness, faith, and self-control to grow and flourish. So scripture shows us what is good and to be desired and what is evil and must be cast out. In order to get free inside we must identify our particular issues and resist them. This theme contrasting the old man and the new man is reiterated in Ephesians four and five. Bind every spirit and evil tendency and pray for deliverance. We have the power to bind and loose and we must exercise that power. Unless we begin to take authority over our lives, lining ourselves up with the word of God and speaking its truths, we we live defeated lives. Christ gave to the church the keys of binding and loosening in order to free ourselves and others from the consequences and predicaments of the old man and to put on the new man and be renewed in the Spirit after the image of Christ. Speak the words of scripture over your life. “I am a new man created in righteousness and holiness.” “I walk by faith and not by sight” “I pray to live in love, joy, and peace and I mortify lust, anger, filthy communication, and fornication.” “God delights in the prosperity of his servants.” “I put off the old man and put on the new man.” “I bind the spirit of covetousness and loose the spirit of generosity.” Getting free should be every Christian's objective. Once there we can begin to dwell in the secret place of the most High and abide under the shadow of the Almighty. Once we get there we can begin to live in victory and peace. Once we get there we will have a direct connection with God and goodness and mercy shall follow us. Take the direction of scripture and forsake the world. amen |
