Freedom and Slavery

The freedom we have in Christ is a freedom from our past, a freedom from the yoke of bondage.  The blood of Christ makes me free from sin from anxiety from anger from unforgiveness from despair.  This is the freedom we have in Christ.  When we are born again we are made free.  This freedom is glorious.  It is like the washing of regeneration being made clean and made pure and holy.  We do not go back to our past life but move forward with our hand to the plough making great strides in the kingdom of God and as we move forward we make straight paths to the kingdom.  Those who are born again experience this freedom.  It is knowing that our sins are forgiven that we have peace and joy.  It is knowing that God is watching us and we are not alone that we experience his love.   It is knowing that all things will work together for good to them that are the called of God that we have purpose in life.

The freedom we have in Christ is a freedom that brings peace, and joy and love in the Holy Ghost.  Before our redemption we were a slave to sin.  He who yields to sin is a slave to sin.  When we come into a relationship with God we are freed from this slavery.  Now, however, we are the slaves of Christ.  We must die to sin, and the flesh, and the world, for friendship with the world is enmity with God and we must yoke ourselves to Christ.  The process of freedom from self and sin and the world is a process that brings us into slavery with Christ.  The process of dying is a painful one and sanctification takes time.  The Holy Spirit wants nothing more than for Christ to be manifest in us and through us.  This process breaks us and it is through brokenness that we become bond slaves to Christ.  We are either the slaves of God or slaves of the devil.  Until we are born again we are slaves to the devil.  Once we are made free we become slaves to God.  It can not be otherwise.  People who reject Christ reject him because they wish to be free to sin, to do what they want when they want to.  They do not realize that they do not have power to stop sinning and are in the hands of the devil.  People who repent and yield to the Spirit of God realize that they are in bondage and that they need to be set free.  As they repent they experience the cleansing power of the blood and become yoked to Christ.  The process from this point onward is a process of breaking the stranglehold of the flesh and the passion for the things of the world and yielding to the Spirit of God.  The baptism of the Holy Ghost places the seal of the Father on us and we will forever serve the risen Christ.

Freedom and slavery is the paradox of the new covenant.  When we become free from sin we become the slaves of Christ.  If we chose to remain bound to sin we will never experience the freedom that Christ gives and our yoking with him.  But if we yield to the Spirit of God and repent from our sin we will know the truth and the truth will make us free and in that freedom we will be forever a slave to God.  Man has one of two choices.  He can serve God or the devil but serve he must.  The reward of sin is death.  The reward of righteousness is everlasting life.  God calls us to a life in service to his Son.  Choose today whom you will serve.

Amen
