There is great truth in the statement, “You can bring a horse to water but you cannot make him drink”. If you think about it you can go to dinner but you cannot predict if you will have an appetite. You can go to bed but you cannot predict sleepiness. There are many things we do that we cannot will. We an make people keep the law but we cannot will allegiance. We can make people treat us properly but we cannot will respect. There is a spiritual dimension to life that is beyond the realm of our control. For example, we can make people read the gospel but we cannot predict if it will reach their heart. We can demonstrate the love Christ had for the sinner but we cannot will surrender to Him. Ultimately, we are at the mercy of God and whether we like it or not, it is only when we realize our own dependence upon the Spirit will we fully grasp the human condition. The worldly, humanistic man believes by sheer willpower and determination he can make life work until he comes up against life's struggles that are beyond man's control to solve. So when you have a night where you cannot sleep recognize your need for God to do something for you that you cannot do for yourself and give your life to Him. Amen |
