Wisdom From Above

But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then
peaceable, gentle, and easy to be entreated, full of
mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without
hypocrisy.
Jm3:17

This letter begins with James telling us that if any lack wisdom, let them ask, and it shall be given them.  Why not?  God desires us to be pure, peaceable gentle, merciful and fruitful.  God wants us to be impartial and unhypocritical.  The world needs wisdom desperately.  So does the church. But how do we get there?  We begin by recognizing that we are not there.  We must first receive Jesus as Savior and Lord.  We must humble ourselves and repent.  Without Jesus, we may be civilized but not spiritual.  Then the long process of learning the word.  Without that knowledge our wisdom is merely worldly.  All scripture is God-breathed.  We must receive the Holy Spirit who makes the word present and real to us.  Unless we study God's word we cannot rightly divide it and if we do not rightly divide it, we are prone to heresy.  Next, to gain wisdom, requires a certain lifestyle.  We can live in the world but we cannot be part of the world.  We must choose to live a spiritual life by forsaking the world and unless we do, we are subject to being choked by the cares of the world, the deceitfulness of riches, and the lust of other things.  Silence, prayer, meditation are a big part of this process.  Along with a certain lifestyle, wisdom requires life experience.  Persecution and trials coupled with grace and the Spirit, gives us knowledge and understanding that cannot come by books and theory.  We can not effectively minister God's word without having experienced the testing which makes us grow.  Without persecution and trials we will lack compassion and without compassion and love, wisdom is hollow.  Finally, wisdom requires the indwelling of the Father.  Jesus, though baptized with the Holy Spirit, stated that the Father dwelling in him did the works.  He said, “I and the Father are one.”  Wisdom requires the operation of the Trinity and we get there by yielding to the inner witness, dying to self, and taking up our cross.

Wisdom in Proverbs is the principle thing and with wisdom get understanding.  So it behooves us to take the word of God quite seriously regardless of the cost or sacrifice.  To be truly wise is to be truly charitable: long-suffering and kind, thinking no evil, rejoicing in the truth, not puffed up, bearing all things, enduring all things, believing all thing and hoping all things.  Love never fails.  Wisdom and Love are the greatest gifts the old testament and the new testament can give us.  If you lack wisdom God is there to give it to you but it is not cheap.  So pay the price.

Amen.
