For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish
foolishness;
but unto us which are saved, it is the power of God' 1Cor1:18 Ego in the kingdom of God is a big hindrance. Nobody likes to appear foolish unless God has done something in your life which makes you willing to do anything to please God. Yet for those who have garnished for themselves a following, the gospel is meat and potatoes. They have reaped carnal things for themselves and preach a gospel of prosperity and success and for that they appear anything but foolish. . Yet for those who chose to remain little and obscure the preaching the gospel of the cross brings about wry condescension and not a few chuckles. I am glad I do not often see the downward look and humor but it has often been there in the communities I have lived in. Preaching the gospel in most circles is bad taste and out of place and to testify to the grace of God is given little credence. I have worked in the scientific community for many years and for the intelligentsia God is not a common topic. Neither is God much respected in the political and educational world of the modern era. So unless you are willing to appear foolish, you have little chance to preach the cross and unless you have experienced the power of God through the preaching of the cross, there is little motivation to preach. If you have grown up with religion and have stayed close to the cuff, religion is a social activity performed on Sundays and sharing your faith nonexistent. Unless you have experienced the power of God, a sinner saved by grace, a shipwreck put back afloat by the blood of Christ, the death of the old man made a new creature in Christ, then not only will you not consider being foolish, you do not know the power of God. The prodigal son knew the power of God, the elder son did not. Jesus Christ came for the sinner. That is always the avenue to witness. He came to heal the sick, both physical and spiritual. We may look foolish to those who are lost but to the person seeking help, desperate enough to come to Christ, it becomes the power of God. When God gives the witness of the Spirit to preach, pray, or give testimony, just do it and don't be concerned about how you look. Your words, your prayer, your message might just usher in the kingdom of God for some storm tossed ship adrift, some person who needs a touch of God and a word of faith to bring about the victory. If there is no motivation to preach the cross, you need to consider the state of your soul and whether you are a child of the King. Unless God has truly done something in your life, you are still on the outside looking in. Consider asking Jesus into your heart and accept whatever consequences God may have for your life, even preaching the cross to some lost soul. May God bless you.Amen. |
