If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you
also ought to
wash one another's feet. The way into the inner life of Christ can only be comprehended by becoming a servant-king. It is only through the door of humility that one gets insight into the psychology of Christ. Those in scripture who would not lift a finger to help the poor, those who had no compassion for the sinner, those who prided themselves on keeping the law could not grasp the mercy, love, and forgiveness of the Savior. They, though law-abiding, had no compassion. They, though law-abiding, were full of pride, conceit, and judgment and were jealous of Jesus. Jesus did not come for the righteous. He came for the sinner. Jesus did not come to be made king. He came to die on a tree. He came to be made a curse for us. He died a sinner's death so that the sinner might be made righteous. The temptation for the Spirit-filled Christian is to get caught up in the gifts and to lose the grace of Christ: to lose the grace of being a servant-king. Access to the mind of Christ is found not just in the word but by living the word. All wisdom, knowledge and truth is tied up in Jesus washing the disciple's feet. All glory and grace is received through humility and love, sacrifice and surrender, sharing in the suffering of Christ. The mind of Christ is counter-intuitive. It runs in a different direction to the world and the natural mind. Humility is the entrance to grace and salvation. It is also the entrance to the Holy Spirit and to wisdom, knowledge and truth. Because Jesus accepted his role from the Father to become a servant-king, he had complete access to the Father, and it is by accepting that same role, do we share in the glory of God. Become a servant-king and the world will despise you. Become a servant-king and God will honor you. Become a servant-king and you will bear witness to the way, the truth, and the life and Jesus will abide with you and be with you forever. Amen. |
