Depth

For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, the lust of the
eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.

1Jn2:16

The contrast between the shallow and the profound, the world and God is a deep one.  The wisdom from above and the wisdom from below is as wide as the heavens are long and finding someone who has grasped some of the depth of God is a great achievement.  Our culture which has severed God from its roots, has produced many people who lack depth and morals.  They are only taught to embrace the world and as a result they only pursue the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life.  They are mere pleasure seekers, seeking immediate gratification and lack the love of the Father and what it takes to overcome the trials and tribulations of life.  As a consequence, relationships begin on a high, with great hope and enthusiasm, but lack the stamina and determination to withstand a long and lasting duration.  Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount ends with the parable of those who build houses on sand and those who build houses on the rock and tells us in no uncertain terms that unless you put the word of God into practice, when the storms of life hit, your house will come tumbling down.  Our culture leaves little choice for those looking for someone with depth of character and knowledge of God.  Wisdom is reduced to methods to gain wealth, status, beauty, and fame and not what is pure, peaceful, easy to be entreated, without partiality and without hypocrisy.  Consequently marriages and relationships don't last, trust is minimal, and cynicism abounds.  Because we do not grow up in a healthy, godly environment people reduce God to the quick fix rather than to a God who can change the way we live and look at life.  Faith has more to do with what we say than who we are and the connection between a spiritual life and spiritual gifts is broken. In contrast, the more of God we have, the more faith we have and we receive more of God by stillness, silence, word study, and charity.  Not only must we know the word and speak the word, we must put the word into practice.  We must cultivate a life style that is pleasing to God so that he can freely bless without contradiction and inconsistency and the time it takes to unlearn the evil and habituate the good is long and arduous.

If you are a person looking for a companion or even just a friend, know at least what you are looking for and where to find it.  Unless you find at least one person of depth your life will not be complete nor satisfying.  If you are not that person yourself, your best prayer would be to ask God to help you change your lifestyle, what you really need and want, and strength to make change.  Then you will be pleasantly surprised how God begins to give you love, peace, and joy no matter in what way and what form.

Amen
